Saint Regis Tribe and Park Place Issue Statement on Court Ruling Upholding New York Native American PDF Print E-mail

AKWESASNE, N.Y. & LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2003--The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and Park Place Entertainment Corporation (NYSE:PPE) today issued the following joint statement regarding the decision of New York State Supreme Court Justice Joseph C. Teresi to uphold the constitutionality of the 2001 law that authorized the creation of six new Native American casinos in New York State.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe in November 2001 signed definitive agreements with Park Place to develop and manage a $500 million, 750-room casino resort to be built in Sullivan County, New York under the terms and conditions of the 2001 New York Native American gaming law.

This following portion of the statement should be attributed to Saint Regis Mohawk Chief Margaret Terrance.

"We are pleased that the New York Court recognizes that the Tribe's sovereign right to gaming is consistent with New York Constitution."

The remaining portion of the statement should be attributed to Park Place Executive Vice President and General Counsel Bernard E. DeLury, Jr.

"Today's decision by Justice Teresi represents a major step forward in the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's efforts to bring the benefits of jobs and economic development to Sullivan County and the state of New York.

"Justice Teresi makes it clear that Native Americans in New York state have the same right to build and operate casinos as they do in other states, such as Connecticut, that permit other types of Class III gaming.

"We look forward to working with the newly-elected Tribal Chiefs to move forward with development of the Mohawk Mountain Casino Resort."
