New York Governor Wants to Amend State Constitution to Allow Casinos
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has presented a bill to amend the state's constitution to legalize casino gambling in New York.
The proposal would change the language of the long-standing tenet of the state's constitution to allow "casino gambling allowed by the state." This would give state officials broader options in regards to opening new casinos in New York.
Cuomo says casinos will help create much needed revenue for the state as well as new jobs. He also feels the amendment will help organize the "hodge podge" of gaming that's currently allowed at New York racinos and race tracks.
"There's no rhyme or reason to them," he said, adding that the amendment could help bring a "comprehensive gaming program" to New York.
The amendment will most likely pass in the legislature, but it will still require approval by the next elected legislature and may be on a ballot by 2013.
