Hope they do not try to get too modern
I happen to be paralyzed and in a wheelchair, but fly out several times a year I fly out to Vegas and always enjoy checking out the various resorts -- especially the Downtown properties.
I never stayed at the Golden Gates because they did not have handicapped-accessible accommodations so it will be interesting to see they make some of the rooms accessible for the disabled with their current renovation project.
On my recent visit, I went to the Golden Gate for my usual fix of shrimp cocktails and the back area was walled off.
The Golden Gate has some very attractive dealers at their table games, but my favorite part of the Golden Gate is the food.
Besides the $1.99 shrimp cocktails, I think they have the best coffee shop downtown. Their breakfast items -- including pancakes, French toast, fresh baked muffins, pies and fresh squeezed orange juice -- are some of the best anywhere. Among the entrees I enjoy are the roast turkey dinner and the chicken pot pie.
The service in the coffee shop is excellent and there are several staff who have been their many years and do their job to perfection.
Looking forward to see the completed renovations at the Golden Gate. I just hope they don't wipe away that old Las Vegas feeling and atmosphere.
An Original!
This small hotel and casino goes back to the turn of the century! Lots of fun in the casino, pretty lady dealers, cheap table games, nice old slot machines. Great Deli and Shrimp Bar. Old pictures of San Francisco, hence the name Golden Gate. Players card always has an offer for new sign ups.

Golden Gate Hotel & Casino
We always drop in at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino when we visit the Fremont Street area. When we first got our players cards we got free shrimp cocktails that were great. We used coupons from the ACG to get free play after playing.
GO FOR THE SHRIMP COCKTAIL
All I can say, is get the shrimp cocktail. For $1.99, it has to be the BEST VALUE in Vegas, and the best in taste. They also have a bucket of "help yourself" crackers which go great with it.
Wash it all down with a Margarita. They are really good here.
Like most downtown places, the Video Poker is decent. Play it at the bar and drink bottled beer, not a fan of draught beer here.

Small rooms, affordable, good location...
Ok, these are some of the tiniest rooms I've ever stayed in. Smaller than NYC rooms even! Ditto on the bathrooms. Having said that the location is great, the staff is super, and the rooms were clean and reasonably updated. If you are on a Budget the Gate will serve you well. tip: ask for an "exterior room" ... The interior rooms don't really have a window/view. PS: give the shrimp cocktail a try..it's great
Great Renovation
The rooms are small, and the bathrooms really, really small. But the renovation has made it all quite pleasant. The decor is all in black, white and orange. Kind of a Halloween look! Even the coffee maker is black. There is a large flat screen TV and what looks to be free internet access (I did not use it, so I can't be sure it was free).
The front desk was a problem. The people there seem to be inexplicably slow, both on check in and check out, as well as in answering questions. This seems to be a habit, as I have stayed here several times and it is always a long wait to speak to someone, even when there is only one person ahead of you.
The first time I asked for late checkout they said it was against their policy. When I asked for 10 extra minutes they said "no" and said even one minute late would be subject to a charge. Also, you had to check out in person and stand in line, instead of simply calling to say you are leaving, as is customary in most hotels. Since that time I have made it a point to check out at least 15 minutes early and never ask for late check out.
But the renovated rooms are quite pleasant and reasonably priced. If you don't mind being crowded, you'll enjoy it.
The proximity of the excellent deli to your room is great. Or, stay downstairs and enjoy listening to the piano player. The restaurant is good too. Great prime rib dinner and fair pricing.
Surpise with redone rooms!
Had a couple free offers & never got a chance to use them, then surfing the web one night, noticed they had an anniversary room special and decided to take a chance. What a pleasant surprise.
Room was not large but then we are only in the room to change and catch a couple winks. Newly redecorated tastefully, comfortable bed, nice TV, room with a view (Fremont Street) which I requested, great for people watching! Bathroom was tiny but again what do you go in the bathroom for.. You don't live in there. The money we saved was spent elsewhere and we enjoyed that. Would visit again. Easy to get in & out, quick service, great shrimp cocktail and very friendly staff!
Good
Visited 7/9/08. The shrimp cocktail is the best here of any where in Vegas! The big margaritas are great!
Old and kind of weird
This place is very old and very cool. I really liked the snack bar with the piano player playing old 1920's songs. It's like stepping back in time.
The casino was small and smelled old. 99-cent shrimp cocktail. Old slots. Worn out tables. It was so weird I liked it.
