How to Play Soft 18 in Blackjack?

By Henry Tamburin PH.D.

One of the hands that blackjack players often misplay is soft 18. This is a hand that totals 18 and contains an ace counted as 11. Examples of soft 18 hands are: Ace, 7 or Ace, 3, 4.

The reason the above hands are classified as “soft” 18 is because the strategy for playing them is different from a hand that totals 18 and that either doesn’t contain an Ace (e.g., 10-8), or, if an Ace is present, it is counted as 1 (e.g., 5-9-A-3). (These are known as “hard” 18 hands.)

The Future of Edge Sorting

The Future of Edge Sorting

By Eliot Jacobson Ph.D.

There have now been three court decisions (and two appeals) in three distinct jurisdictions regarding the question of whether edge sorting at mini-baccarat is advantage play. In every case the decision came down on the side of the casino without a determination of criminal cheating. As Phil Ivey's expert in the Crockford's case, I obviously fall into the "edge sorting is advantage play" camp. However, after these decisions, it's a matter of making sense of the verdicts and working outward from there.

As a reminder, there are two versions of baccarat. In one, the players can touch the cards. In this case the cards are "one use." That is, the cards are thrown out after each shoe and fresh cards are brought in for the next shoe. It is obvious that no edge sorting can take place if the game is dealt in this fashion. This version is often referred to as "midi-baccarat" or "big baccarat" depending on the size of the table.

It’s a given among people who run both live casinos and online casinos: People love to play slot machines.

In some nations, including the United States, slots are the most-played casino games. In the rest, popularity is surging to the point slot play is rivaling table play.

Parlour and Childs Go Head to Head With Electric Blackjack

Parlour and Childs Go Head to Head With Electric Blackjack

By 888casino

Blackjack is a skill-based casino card game where players go head-to-head against the dealer in pursuit of the highest-ranking hand. The magic number is 21, but any hand total that beats the dealer’s hand will suffice. Electric Blackjack adds an entirely new dimension to this game of skill, wit, and strategy: wattage! .

To showcase this new game, We invited legendary Arsenal FC former midfielder Ray Parlour and former TOWIE celebrity, Amy Childs to go head-to-head. The two celebrities arrived at Aspers Casino in Westfield. Much to their surprise, they quickly discovered that the name Electric Blackjack certainly packed a wallop. Electrodes were placed on the seats of both players and one wrong call resulted in the dealer pressing the buzzer and delivering shock therapy par excellence.

How to Win at Blackjack Without Counting Cards?

How to Win at Blackjack Without Counting Cards?

By Nicholas Colon

A common question that I get from gamblers is: “Can you win at blackjack without card counting?”. Much to their surprise the answer is yes.

Here are two ways how:

Method 1: Hole Carding: Identifying the what the dealers hole card and adjusting your strategy.
Method 2: Frontloading: Being able to identify what the next card will be and adjusting your strategy accordingly.

These methods yield a substantially higher advantage than traditional card counting methods, but the trade off is they require a lot more advance work. This includes scouting dealers, evaluating shuffles determining wager thresholds of the casino, as to not draw to much attention from pit bosses.

Splitting for Less in Blackjack

Splitting for Less in Blackjack

By Eliot Jacobson Ph.D.

The house rules for blackjack at most casinos allow players to "double for less." Simply put, a player can double a hand for an amount less than the amount of their initial wager. Doubling takes place when the player has a big advantage on a hand. In exchange for only receiving one more card, the player is allowed to increase his wager. Wagering anything less that the full double is equal to giving back some of the player's expected win amount. In short, it is dumb for a player to double for less, so the house is glad to allow players to do so.

On the other hand, it would be very unusual to find a casino that gives the player an opportunity to "split for less" (SFL). The standard split rule states that if the player is dealt a pair of identical cards (a pair), then the player can split them into two separate hands and receive a new second card on each, while being required to place a full initial bet alongside each split hand.
