The vandalism is generally committed by a gambler who has been playing for a long amount of time at a machine without hitting a bonus or has lost a good deal of money.
The crime usually ends up costing them more that they lost in the first place, and they can end up doing serious damage to their hands.
George Govan, a 56-year-old man from Brooklyn, punched a slot machine in January and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.
“I lost $300 without a bonus, so yes, I broke the machine,” Govan told casino security guards. “And I’ll do it again.”
Many of those who damage the slots are banned from the casino either for life or an extended amount of time.
