The authorization was granted yesterday during the Commission on Marine Resources’ monthly meeting. The new marina will be built adjacent to the casino project, near the foot of 5th Street on Biloxi‘s Back Bay. A DMR coastal ecology representative told commissioners several other sites had been considered for the new marina, but were rejected due a series of inconveniences including ownership complications or wetland concerns. According to several media sources, the marina still requires approval from the Department of Environmental Quality.
In February, 2011, the City Council and the State authorities unanimously approved the construction of a new Biloxi Casino on Back Bay. The $48 million project will include a 60,000 square feet casino, a Margaritaville restaurant and lounge, retail store, and events center. Developers said the casino is scheduled to be ready to open its doors to the public in early 2012. The project is also expected to create at least 700 new jobs upon its completion.
