According to officials at the Connecticut casino, 282 employees will be laid off immediately and an additional 46 will be let go at the end of October when the casino closes one of its restaurants. The casino will also no longer offer keno.

“You have to put this in the context of the amazing decline in business we’ve experienced,” said Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority. “The last thing we ever want to do is lay people off, but we had to do this to make the size of our workforce appropriate to our business volumes.”

Decreasing business at both Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino can be attributed to a weak economy and increasing competition from New York casinos.
