A new casino is scheduled to open near Martin, South Dakota in the next few weeks and will be the 12th Indian casino in the state.
The East Winds Casino will have 100 gaming machines and is set to open around December 15 with a grand opening sometime in January, said Kevin Lien, who currently manages the Prairie Wind Casino and will soon manage the East Winds Casino as well.
Lien said there shouldn’t be too much competition between the two casinos.
“It’s just going to be a smaller casino with fewer amenities,” he said of the East Winds. “I’m extremely excited.”
The East Winds will be fairly small compared to Prairie Wind, the only casino currently on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Prairie Wind Casino has five gambling tables, 309 gambling machines, four poker tables, 78 hotel rooms and a cafe and buffet. East Winds Casino will have only video gambling machines, with no hotel or other amenities.
According to the 2011 Indian Gaming Industry Report, South Dakota Native American casino revenues grew 3 percent in 2009, though revenue fell 1 percent nationwide.
