Voters Approve Slot Machines for N. Florida Pari-Mutuel Facility
The facility recently held Florida's first-ever parimutuel barrel-racing meet.
Although the ballot measure passed by a large margin, 6,042 in favor to 3,558 opposed, the facility may still not be able to open a casino as the permit is facing opposition from Florida's attorney general and many Florida horsemen’s groups.
Gretna Racing, which is located 25 miles west of Tallahassee, is very close to the Georgia border, where gambling is illegal. If the facility does get slot machines, this may help draw in gambling revenue from out of state.
Currently, the only Florida casinos are the seven Seminole Indian Casinos. Additionally, pari-mutuel locations in Miami-Dade and Broward counties are allowed to offer slot machines only.
Last week, voters in a northern Florida county passed a measure that will allow a barrel-racing facility to have slot machines. Barrel racing is an event in which a horse and rider race to complete a clover-leaf pattern around barrels in the fastest time.
