Pleasantly surprising
I visited Sky City Casino Hotel for the second time just recently and I have to say that for a Casino Hotel at a Truck stop I was very surprised compared to my first visit some 3 years ago. The Casino had brand new carpet and it looked like everything had been repainted so there was a colorful and warm atmosphere. I needed a replacement Players Card and the girls in the Players Club were extremely friendly and efficient. There were plenty of the latest games that I recognized from Vegas casinos and a lot of penny machines. I ate in the main restaurant and really enjoyed their $12.99 Prime Rib buffet!!
Checking into the hotel was a breeze with a friendly front desk clerk only too eager to please and answer my questions. Then going into my room I was pleasantly surprised at all the upgrades to the bathroom and bedding since my last visit. The room even had a huge flat screen TV and a refrigerator.
I will definitely stop in again on my next visit to New Mexico as this is a dramatically improved property and for the price, excellent value!!!
Very Blue Collar
Unfortunately, Sky City Casino has deteriorated since I first tried them 4 years ago. Their hotel rooms are still decent but not as nice as when they were first built. Everything else has deteriorated significantly. The slots are mostly video games, the table games are limited, they closed their poker room, and it's essentially a "blue collar" atmosphere. They appear to cater mostly to truckers now and I guess they don't believe the truckers care much about the atmosphere.
Their restaurant used to be very good...it was like eating at home. I don't know what it's like now because we couldn't get seated and the prices have gone up so much we decided not to wait any longer.
If you need a gambling "fix" this is an acceptable place to stop, otherwise, keep driving!
