Almost a year since last review - still no change
Well, its been almost a year since my last review and disappointment still the main theme of the Mohegan Sun. This place is beautiful, but they are so tight on their slots it borders insulting. I went in there on the 5th of July with 150.00 to play on, I was done in less than 45 minutes. And considering I had to wait 15 minutes for a slot attendant to come and fix one of the machines I was playing I can tell you I was little more than just disappointed. I did manage to hit a few bonus rounds on a couple of the slots, however, on a dollar bet, 25 bonus spins, I won less than 8.00. I wont be back again for quite a while, just not worth it.
Old is better than new
The old Casino was much better than the new. There you had 9-6 payouts on the video poker. The new Casino has only 6-5. Not much of a chance to win. Forget about the penny slots all together. Must say I do like Mohegan Suns in Conn.
Table Games
I find the other comments surprising! I enjoyed my trips (from Canada) to Foxwoods and found the Connecticut Mohegan Sun nearby extra enjoyable because of their large area of poker tables designated Non-Smoking. (I don't want to breathe someone else's smoke coming out of their cancerous lungs!) Because of the enjoyment I had at the Connecticut Mohegan Sun I took a three day trip to their Poconos one in Wilkes Barre. Very, very enjoyable. Got a straight flush and returned home after three days with over $9,000 and I'm not a heavy bettor. I will be returning.
For being so close, I never go there.
I work 10 minutes from the place, and yet I visit Atlantic City more often than Mohegan Sun. Probably because the blackjack tables use the continuous shuffle machines. I've never played blackjack where the dealer gets blackjack as often as here. Video poker machines have horrible paytables. I know that it's hard to find 9/6 JOB, but I at least expect 8/5. Not here. 7/5 is the norm and they even have some 6/5. The dealers are all nice, but the rest of the staff is hit or miss. I think I'll continue to stay away.
slots are tight
I live right down the street from the casino and was going 2-3 times a week. Always had fun, but found as time went by payoffs
really started to dwindle no matter if I played low or high bets. I think they may have lowered the percentages to favor the house.
This is just my opinion, I know it's regulated..but bonus spins (for sure) don't pay very well any more, even with max bets. Of course tables (blackjack etc.) are better because of the skill involved. Anyway! I don't go to Mohegan Sun very often any more... Atlantic City pays better in my mind...at least I walk out with a few dollars more than at Mohegan Sun. Like the casino a lot for everything else..and will stop in from time to time to see if things might have changed. Good luck to you all :-)
PATHETIC
Well, another year has gone by since my last review of the "Mo" as its called around here. Problem seems to be that they just don't give a crap about what people think of their casino since NOTHING has changed. If anything it has gotten even worse, if that is possible. The following are reasons that you should stay as far away from this casino as possible:
1. SLOT PLAY: Playing the slots you are much more likely to lose than win, however, the machines should be paying enough to make your stay enjoyable and exciting. This is not the case here. They have the LOWEST payout rate of any casino in the state hanging just barely over 90%. Hitting bonuses is difficult and when you do the payouts on their bonus play is just plain pathetic. 50 spins on a 1.00 bet should at east earn you 40 or 50.00 after 60.00 worth of play into the machine. On average, the payouts for their bonuses were between 10 and 20.00. That my friends is just downright insulting. My advice to you is to save your money and go to Mt Airy or Atlantic city where at least you will get a few hours of enjoyment for your money.
2. EQUIPMENT: Get ready for broken buttons, open doors, cracked glass, and constant tilts. You will find that when you are playing many of their games that if by chance you do start to "win" a little bit, their machines have a bad habit of going into "Tilt" mode and shutting down on you. I know that things like that happen from time to time, but when it seems to happen ALL of the time you start to wonder. Especially when after waiting 20 or 30 minutes for someone to come and fix the machine you can't get a winning line to save your life. The Ticket cashing machines are constantly out of order so you have to go stand in line at the cashier to cash out and they usually only have one or 2 cashiers on at any given time, even on their busiest nights.
3. DINING: Let me just say this, get in your car and go somewhere else. It will be not only cheaper, but the food will be much better. Anywhere you go.
4. PLAYERS CLUB: Ok, this is interesting, no hotel and nothing else to do BUT gamble. This would make you think that just maybe their comps would be outstanding. Think again. As a member of their "ELITE" club I received a whopping 20.00 in free play per week for the month of July, didn't get invited to any events, NOTHING. I didn't even get an invite to the swipe your card for freeplay event. My point is this, if you think you might at least get some nice freebies don't get your hopes up.
In short, this is a pathetic excuse for a casino. I hope you will take my advice and save your money, it would be more exciting to make the drive to Atlantic City where there is more to do and the slot play is a little better.
go there to eat not gamble
Great place to eat but, I gamble around the world, I would have to state when it comes to payback on machines this is one of the worst casino I ever went to more than 6 times and never won anything. I'm down over 10K on machines. Stay away from the machines but the table games are fair.
cheapo's
When it first opened. I loved it there but now since the TABLE GAMES are there, forget it .. the payoff on the slots are an insult. They are also cheap in their give aways ... well, unless you're a high roller. They give you crap if you don't turn your whole paycheck over to them. If you want to win $3.50 on a bonus go there,if not,go to MT. AIRY !
Are They on The Up & Up?
One time I was playing a machine and I always play Max Bet so you just hit the max bet button but a win came up and I did not get the win. Called for an attendant and their max bet button was not connected. Would of been a nice win. Another time playing 5-cent Monopoly it was adding up my win which should of been 12 hundred and some dollars. It got to the $1234 and the screen went black and came back on to $700. Called the attendant they did nothing. Everyone should keep track of their comp points. What a joke that is. Anyone in their right mind will stay away from this place. The more who stay away the sooner they will come around to being fair. The whole place is a rip off. Their machines will not take $100 bills and neither will their ticket redemption booths with the serial # starting with H yet they continue to give these $100 bills back to us. This casino is very poor quality. I could go on and on but what is the use? People do not stick together anyway.
Promotions are pathetic, go to any other casino in
The Mohegan Sun promotions are, in my opinion, pretty pathethic. I received a mailer saying that on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the month of September, everyone that came to the casino would win free slot play. I went on three different weeks and I was a' winner', if you consider $5 to be a winner. It's hard to believe that they give amounts that small. It's not worth the gas and or Turnpike tolls for $5.
Also, they had a Blackjack promotion where you got your name in a weekly drawing if you got three blackjacks. The catch, which is in the details of the promotion is that you have to be there for the drawing, at 7:00 PM on Sunday night to win. They won't even tell you if your name was drawn when you call. They said they have no information on the winners. Either they are inept, or just don't want to tell you if you are a winner. They just keep saying that you need to come in to see if you won. I like this casino but this will make me try Mount Airy and other PA casinos.
Its Been a YEAR since last review, and no change
Well, it's been a year since my last review of the Mohegan Sun, and I have to say, nothing has changed. The payouts are still insulting to the players, and everything else is pretty much the same. I haven't gone to the MS as much because I have found that the play is much better at mount airy even though the Mohegan is 10 minutes away and Mount Airy is 45 minutes, I would prefer to play at Mount Airy.
Mohegan Sun reps say that the payout odds are the same in every casino in Pennsylvania, that my friends is a farce. If you read the reviews of other Mohegan Sun Casinos you will find pretty much the same attitudes as you do towards this one. Save your money, go to Mount Airy
Stay Home
You be the judge....I dropped $500 and the best I could get on any slot was $52, $83, and $31.
Everything else was not even worth mentioning.
You would be better off to do drugs... at least that way you get something. I can't even say I won something and played it back. What a rip off.
FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whomever choose to write the negative story about the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, then sign my name(Jason Croughn) was and is a pathetic human being!
I in no way feel as if Mohegan Sun at pocono downs is any of those horrible things this person spoke of. also to add, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is the #1 fine dining steakhouse in the world and has been proving this fact since 1965!
To the lonely pathetic person who hides and chooses to write negative things and sign my name...I feel sorry for you!
casino review
No brainer for slots. Penny slots are misleading. In order to get bonuses on new machines, it requires maximum bet. For instance, .25 cents for bars---.75 cents for 7s---- $1.25 for bonus. Yes, there are some winners, but not too many people leave with more than they came with. Payoff must change for the better. Payoffs seems worse on special days.
recent upgrades, better than it's been
There's been a recent investment in new slots (since 11/09). There is more variety, and seems to be better payback, more machines that pay a medium number of medium wins. You can now take a couple hundred in and stay a few hours, rather than be cashed out in 15 minutes.
Restaurants are a little bit pricey, but if you get the mailers there are frequent "buy one get one 50% off" offers, and the food is good. A year ago I'd have given it a 1, now it's a solid 2.2. Which is pretty good, considering PA's usurious tax rate on the casinos (the true source
of the lousy paybacks).
Old casino was better
The old casino was much better, the slots paid out more.
No more fun at the sun
As a member of their "Elite Club", I have been coming to the Sun since it first opened. It used to be a fun place to come and drop a few dollars in the slots and have a good time. However, over the last several months I walk in with my 100 dollars and ten minutes later I am walking out broke.
You can't even get a decent amount of play out of the machines. My last trip I played a Playboy penny slot machine, mid range bet (.75 cents) and hit the bonus. While in bonus mode I won a total of 50 free games, the maximum allowed by the machine. I counted 35 straight spins without a single winning line. Not one!!! When the bonus was finished I had won a total of $40.00. This wouldnt be so bad if I wasnt already into the machine for $60.00. I decided to continue to play the machine and after playing back $20.00 more without a single winning line or bonus I left. I have found this to be the norm when playing there anymore. You have little chance of hitting bonus rounds on the machines and when you do hit them, they pay out horribly. Outside of the Atmosphere of the casino, there is little other reason to keep going there.
What a waste!
I live in the Wilkes Barre area. The video poker return is terrible. The best I found was 97.8%, and most are in the 95%-96% range. And no progressives on VP - reel slots only. I haven't put a penny in these machines and never will. Currently, table games are electronic only but real live table games are supposed to arrive shortly. Based on the VP payback, I'm expecting 8-deck shoes with the cut card after 4 decks, auto-shuffle machines, and a 6-5 blackjack payout. If we get anything better, it will be a surprise.
All chairs are fixed to the floor. You can't move them forward or back to make yourself comfortable. Not that it matters to me since I don't play here, but I note this because I find it very annoying (I have long legs and always slide the chair back for comfort) at other casinos.
The casino is arranged in a circle, games inside, businesses outside, and a bar in the middle, much like the Hard Rock in Vegas. But unlike the Hard Rock, the casino floor is not sunken, instead the center bar is raised. And the machines are packed in pretty tight (not as bad as the El Cortez used to be, but still squeezed in like most downtown LV casinos today) with most having their volume set to maximum. This results in a claustrophobic feeling - you can see and hear only what's immediately around you. IMHO, they really blew it here. They had the opportunity to design something nice from scratch, and this is the best they could come up with? I also feel sorry for the handicapped. I'm not handicapped and am capable of walking a good distance, but ALL parking is a LONG way from the casino, even the closest handicapped spots. For some reason, they have nothing but roads and grass near the casino, with all parking way outside.
The food outlets are the only reason to consider going here. But be prepared to open your wallet; the buffet is more expensive than the Vegas-equivalent locals buffets, and the restaurants are expensive. The food is good, but I've personally decided to stay away and save my money for Vegas (when I go out to eat, I go elsewhere - it's cheaper).
In summary, this place is for suckers. But there seem to be plenty of them, people with magic pants that continually produce money. Until the suckers run out of money, things aren't going to change.
Recommended with reservations
We've been there a dozen times and at Mt. Airy about 30 times. We've been to well over one hundred casinos and only Vegas is Vegas. So if you just want a pleasant evening out playing machines MS fills the bill. Remember at MS you have the advantage of live harness racing (and simulcasting) in a great atmosphere which gives you variety.
My wife is a slot player and loves the place. I play the horses or video poker. Payout tables on video poker machines are generally lousy. The policy of "no free alcoholic drinks" (I think) comes from the fact that there is no hotel on premises and nearly all guests will drive home. MS does not want to get sued like other establishments (Giant Stadium in NJ) for "causing" auto accidents by "pushing" drinks. (Consider this as an educated guess by a lawyer)
Buffet is excellent for the price. Great interior design inspired by but not in the league of MS in Ct. Lots of live entertainment and wide reasonably priced food selection. Smoking policy works just fine. Staff while not unpleasant, could be more animated. In Vegas the staff seeks the customer out, in Pennsylvania the reverse seems to be the rule.
The most logical comparison is not with AC or Vegas but with local competitors (Mt. Airy) and other racinos. As a racino its as nice as any and only lacks "real" table games. Better food selection than Mt. Airy.
Terrrible Place
This place is the worst ever. You will have better luck playing dice in one of the local trailer parks. The place is loaded with all old people with walkers, wheelchairs and air tanks. Dont't forget to mention the old ass people smoking with air tanks. It's small and the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is terribly overrated and priced.
The managers are cheap like used car salesmen and the waitress/waiters are useless. The place is packed with staff running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The steaks are drowned in butter and the sides suck. The mashed potatos are like eating milky potatos with garlic. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE TIME STOPPING HERE!!
DISAPPOINTED
The place is beautiful; the gaming floor is nicely designed. It is a tremendous improvement over the original two story venue. There is a circular walkway around the casino floor which houses various retail stores and the restaurants. The buffet I felt was fabulous for the price.
I was disappointed in the very bad payback percentages of the video poker machines. No 9/6 nor 9/5 Jacks/Better; very bad Deuces/Wild; terrible payoff on Pick'em Poker. i don't know about the high limit area. I only scanned the 25 cent machines in which one can also play 50 cents or $1.00.
The drink situation I found terrible. The only thing free is the coffee and soda. You must pay for your gambling drinks. The cocktail waitresses hound you for a drink; constantly asking if you wish one. If I didn't have to pay for one perhaps they could earn a gratuity.
The gaming atmosphere was pleasant but the video poker machines are terrible. I found a 5 cent triple play Deuces/Wild which I had no choice but to play. If only they would improve the poker payoffs, I might return otherwise it's ciao.

It's not what it was
When the casino first opened the winnings were much better. My pay out percentage is down to about 35% compared to about 65% back about two years ago..and the comps!!! Can they spare the few dollars that they give you after dropping hundreds in the machines?
? The food court and the buffet is really going downhill, I even spoke personally with the food manager who 6 months ago said he was going to improve on it. The dessert place and Ice Cream Place are a rip off ...you're not getting your monies worth.
Last, but not least, they've increased the floor smoking area to 50%. When the floor is about 70% full the smoke is so bad that your eyes start to burn and worst is that your breathing secondhand smoke, if you're concerned about your health stay away. Sure they have a non-smoking area but the smoke drifts all over the entire floor area.
Overall, it's a beautiful facility, the help tries hard, but this casino management needs to get the operations back on track to where it was when it first opened its new addition in 2008. Until it does, I'll start going back to Atlantic City where the machines pay much better and they comp you very generously plus free meals, shows and free hotel rooms..A/C is worth the trip.

I never thought it could get any worse, but it has
I never thought that the play at Mohegan Sun could get any worse, but it has. In the last 6 weeks I have seen the mohegan sun decline in not only their slot play, but in every way imaginable. This casino is in serious trouble if they continue to operate the way they are. Here are some of the main problems I have found with this casino:
1. Slot play. I thought it was bad before, but now it has become just plain insulting to the player. You are lucky if you are able to get a 30% payout on any machine that you play, I know, I was keeping track. On a Playboy machine I was playing I put 40 dollars into it and won exactly 4 dollars back, and that was with a bonus spin. Bonus spins are rare on any machine you play and when you do hit a bonus the payout is horrible. I played a Red Hot Jackpot machine and hit the bonus rounds twice in 40 dollors worth of play. Both bonus rounds paid an average of seven dollars, which it immediately took back without a single winning line in between. If I could have rated the slot play any lower, it would have been in the negative numbers.
2. Atmosphere: There is a lack of friendliness and personality, the employees wander around like zombies on the floor looking like they would rather be somewhere else. And I am sure they have heard alot of complaining from the patrons, so I am sure they would rather be somewhere else, refer to line 1 as to why people are complaining. I will say however that the employees in the Valet department are very friendly and do try to make people feel welcome when they arrive.
3. Machine upkeep: Wow! What is wrong with the people running this place??? Half the card readers dont work most of the time, so you will lose ALOT of comps if you are not watching the readers carefully. I couldnt believe how many of their machines have broken buttons, cracked glass, and burned out lights. One machine I know of in particular has had a broken glass on it for at least the last 4 months and STILL hasnt been repaired. Here's a tip for the management: FIX YOUR BROKEN EQUIPMENT!
4. Food: Greaseburgers from hell, Hotdogs that are better suited to a dog's rubber chew toy, or an overpriced steakhouse no one can afford to go to. The Buffet is not bad, just a little on the bland side. The ice cream place, is good if you can get someone to come out from their back room to actually serve you.

Typical Pennsylvania ripoff
As you may have noticed, I graded some of the categories (1). That is because I could not score it a zero. Most especially the blackjack machines. I would respect a person who placed a gun in my ribs and robbed me of my money more than these machines.
These machines are...simply stated "fixed." You are playing a computer. If you draw a 20, dealer will mysteriously draw 21. Especially if a large bet has been placed. A word to the wise. Stay away from all PA casinos until they allow live card games. That way the casino cheat advantage will vanish.
?
Pennsylvania's "Worse Casino"
I live in Wilkes Barre and was all for the casino when it opened. However, since the opening of the main building the slot play has really gone into the toilet. It used to be fun to go there and drop a few dollars into the machines, you knew the odds were against you but you still gave it a try and they gave you relatively good play. Now there is only one word that I can use to describe the level of play you get from any slot machine there, that word is "Predictable".
Player
If you are a video poker player, this casino is not for you. They have very few video poker machines and the denominations start at $.25. They need more VP machines.
The casino is beautiful and the numerous restruants are okay. It's easy to lose your money very quickly, it seems the payouts are low compared to other casinos.
?
ok i guess
Before the expansion i had very little luck. Now, withe the expansion my luck is better.
My money will last a little longer. This place in the last 5 months is far better than Mt. Airy. Take my word for it, go here instead of there.
?
Not bad
I am not a slot player in the strictest sense. I play only video poker and both are true slot machines in that they use a RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR computer chip in each separate machine unlike NEW YORK STATE where the machines are known as VIDEO LOTTERY TERMINALS.
The difference, which is huge, is that VLT's are controlled by a computer in Albany which programs a certain number of winners, much like lottery scratch tickets; there are only so many winners.
For video poker players strategy is the ultimate choice; not so with VLT's. I am not happy with one floor being smoke free and the other not so because the same machines are not on each floor.
In general, it is a fair place to play but Mt. Airy is much more preferable.
Bring your ATM card
New expansion opened on July 17, 2008. We've been visiting often since original opening in 2006, and when this new casino opened you could leave with some money for the first 3 weeks. Now they've tightened back up and again, you get no play time on your money.
My boyfriend occasionally hits for a few hundred on dollar machines, but not often enough to even out the times when he does NOT. I gave up on quarter machines, they're impossible to hit. You can play pennies for a bit longer, but sometimes you think they 'shut off' all the bonus rounds.
Otherwise the place is really nicely decorated, good food court area, and a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse but you shouldn't go in there unless you have $175 for dinner for two.
It's sad that we have 2 casinos here now within a 45 minute drive of each other (Mt. Airy is close) yet we have to fly out to Vegas next month to have fun. Jeesh.
?
LACK OF VIDO POKER MACHINES
There aren't many video poker machines and the ones they have start at $0.25 and up.
If you want to play video poker, you have to go downstairs to the smoking area, most of the video poker machines upstairs are occupied unless you want to play the dollar and up machines.
They need a bigger variety with lower denominations ($0.05 and up) in their new addition. I hope this happens.
