What happen to this Casino?
If you want to go to gamble, be prepared to be surrounded by very pissed off people. You will not hear anyone shout for joy and you will not see someone getting a payoff. Many of my favorite quarter machines were changed into dollar machines. Why? Be prepared to make your visit short as your money will be gone quickly.
Avoid if possible
I have gambled in dozens of establishments for going on 15+ years and by far without a doubt Ho-Chunk is the worst casino/hotel i've ever come across. I am not even sure where to start with this (bad) review but I think its my responsibility to inform gamblers the bad points about this place to sway people who are on the fence about going or not.
Fist off the food, I have never ever had worse casino food in my life. When you are tapped out for the day on funds and your need some food in the system and you look down to see that you have a free buffet or casino comps I seriously contemplate starving for 12+ hours to eat fast food in the morning. Your chance of getting a meal that has any sense of flavor/taste or value is about as good as walking away with a win from gambling here.
Second is the gambling, its no big secret in wisconsin that gambling is regulated by a small handful of people that have to keep watch over a dozen establishments across the entire state. Most states even with Indian gaming are pretty transparent on slot machine payout percentages and methods of punishing "cheating" table games by the casinos. But in wisconsin its an approximate--unproven % on machine payouts and when casinos have gotten caught rigging table games (blackjack taking ace's out for 5's) it was met with a slap on the wrist penalty. Ho-Chunk knowing this lax policy for the regulators policing policies and they pull no punches with their gambling options. You can honestly do a few laps around the casino and see zero handpays and nobody shouting like they are winning on the machines. The only reactions you notice is people getting angry that their gambling budget lasts 1/2 as long here compared to any other casino in the U.S. As for table games they have only made them worse. I remember being there the weekend on their double-deck blackjack game they removed the option to double after split and split only 2 hands and one of the pit bosses tried to convince me that it was better for the players which I laughed in their face. The only saving grace here which gives it 2 stars for gambling instead of 5 is they do actually have all the gabling options you'd desire in terms of later generation machines, poker room, some-what friendly dealers but it ends there.
Players club is a joke, they can't decypher between a quarter slot machine player and someone who pulls $5 slot machines or $5 blackjack vs someone who wagers at $100+ a throw. You get rated poorly no matter what you play, I can and have lost 2x more here compared to some of the elite Las Vegas properties over the course of a couple days and gotten 80% less in terms of value coming back to me in terms of food, lodging, freeplay, gifts..etc
The overall atmosphere is fair at best, you can't use comps on the fly to pay for alcoholic drinks which is a shame. I know you can make the case for not giving it away because it would put bars in the area in a pinch but the least you could do is use the stingy comps you give away towards your over priced alcoholic drinks so liven up the atmosphere if you are going to rob everyone with tight machines and poor table game rules. If you are a true gambler nobody is there to make sure you are having a good time or getting taken care of but its gambling so whatever right? If you are someone looking for an atmosphere of entertainment and think "Oh, gambling...that sounds fun" please look elsewhere for fun. Ho-Chunk is near one of the biggest tourist traps in the upper midwest--catch a movie, take a boat ride, play mini-golf, ride go-karts just stay away because you will waste more money, waste more time and get super irritated.
If you actually pay for a room at Ho-Chunk you made the first mistake, the best option is getting a cheaper/better option ANYWHERE in the lakedelton/baraboo/wis. dells area and taking the free Ho-Chunk shuttle if you desire to gamble on the property, please exercise this option since there is literally a hundred hotel options in the area and most of them have the things you'd desire (Indoor Pool, Wi-Fi, Breakfast..etc). As stated food options are terrible so unless you are lucky enough to lose the proper amount and get a free stay here I wouldn't actually pay to stay here.
The players club has been robbed. The poor individuals working at the players desk having to tell people some BS about why comps were taken from accounts.... I feel ripped off, drove there knowing I had $120. in comps for food, gas, or hotel. When I arrived was told I had only $20 due to an 'adjustment' in all of the comps at the casino on the players cards. They tried to explain that prior to that was some kind of 'experiment' and the comps were set too high, so they reduced the accounts. Such BS and of course no one was available in management (during the day) to discuss the new adjustment. On top of this the slots are tight just as reported by others and I will not return after losing so much over the last couple of years there. Gambler beware! Take your cash some place else.
i went for the first time with some friends for my birthday. there were about 8 of us!!!! not one of us won a thing!!!! i believe all the machines are rigged! out of 8 of us spending over $300 apiece no1 wins a dime!!! i don't know if id ever go back again. they would have to pay me to return for a second visit!!
Machines here are so TIGHT!!! its unbelievable i go to hochunk atleast once a month and ive never won over 200 dollars. ive spent about close to 6,000 in my life time and im 24! never win. theres got to be something someone can do because its not fair to be robbed like that! and food sucks!
Buffet - skip it. Reminds me of Waffle House quality at Ruth's Chris prices. Yuck. Large casino with decent non-smoking section which gets lots of smoke from the smoking section which is not separated? Brilliant. Indian staff are rude and do not care what you think. Seems like they are trying to get revenge against the white folks? Payouts are not great. Non-smoking section was larger but, race betting and poker tables moved in and cut it in half. Avoid the hotel at all costs!!! Very expensive and very mediocre rooms. Video poker is horrible - nearly all machines are 7/5 payouts on Jacks or Better. We live in Milwaukee and drive to Illinois and Iowa. Our results are well worth the extra time and effort. The Ho-Chunk tribe, much like the Potowatomi, care about 1 thing - making money at any cost. Until more casinos open in Wisconsin, local players will continue to get ripped off. As for us, we will keep driving 2 hours south and west and get treated like valued customers and win some money. Results do not lie.
super tight and worst food in america!!!
I wanted to say that I am 35 and have been going to Ho Chunk for over 17 years. I have never even sniffed a jackpot. I have about 2 out of three in Nevada and about 6-7 at Potawatami. Just to put it in perspective in my last two trips I have lost almost $1500 and not even got 1 four of a kind in video poker. Avoid this casino if you can. Their hotel is fairly nice even though they have only like 12 channels for their TV. Also their food has to be the worst casino food I have ever had in my life.
Hello it's me again making my annual review
I'll be leaving a full review for our entire expirence section for section once we return. It will be interesting because there will be at least 10 couple in our annual group this time. We'll have all kinds of reviews to share with the viewers for this review for our trip.
Don't go on a weekend
My experience is that you just don't do the slots on Friday thru Sunday. The slots are tight and not much fun when they won't pay out. Pathetic. It took two yrs for me to ever get a decent payout from this casino. Probably won't happen for another two years. Go on Mon thru Thurs in the afternoon and you may not go broke on the slots
My wife and I just spent a saturday night at Ho-Chunk.Hotel was OK..nothing special. They put you in a room as far away from the casino as possible even though closer rooms are empty and available.I know what their reasons for this are but I won't go into that here.Food..not so hot..just average.Casino..lots of machines and very little hint of smoke smell. My wife smokes but it did not smell at all.Ok. Now for my soapbox..I have been to dozens of casinos all over this country. I KNOW they are NOT ATMs but seriously..tightest slots ever!!! 20 after 20 in a 3 coin quarter machine..Imagine $80 with NOT A SINGLE HIT.Same for dollars..I do truly believe they have the lowest payback chips available from the manufacturers. Nice overall visit but not again...I do like the CHANCE to win..
I Would Go elsewhere.. Take your pick
I play majority slots in Wisconsin with the exception of few table games. I would say about 1/4 of the slots have the payout ratios listed so you are kind of gambling blind. For the slots - I bet around $1.00 - 3.00 a spin on several games. Usually I can go to Oneida and spend five to seven hours with the amount of money I spend throughout the night, but at this casino the payout ratios were pathetic I was in and out in three hours. I went about 40 spins without winning anything and then when I would win, it would be less than my actual bet - I sometimes got about $20.00 on a spin but it took about $60.00 or order to get it. If I was betting 1.50 a spin I would get around 45-90 cents back after spending several hundreds. I never received any FANTASTIC, OUTSTANDING, SUPER BIG WIN, IMPRESSIVE bonus messages which is rare for even slots; on max bet for a penny slot (life of luxury) I hit the bonus round about 3 times in an hour and half. The bonus around on max bet amount (the accumulated total of each the bonuses) amounted to $11.90 - that's right it's either real bad luck, or these machines were way tight. At Oneida I would net on the same machine over a hundred per bonus round with a bet between 1.00-3.00 a spin. I was on max bet here > 3.00 a spin and received less than 10.00 in a total of three bonuses - this is beyond belief.
Atmosphere: It's not Oneida.. at Oneida there are several staff members walking around and delivering drinks - not here. If you get thirsty be prepared to walk around for about 20 minutes to locate the drink machine (do not expect to get the machine back that you were playing). The staff turned off the ticket redemption machines around 1:00 AM - that means wait in line to redeem the tickets. None of the staff greeted me nor the people I was with. It was kind of a rude awakening - my family and friends go to the Casino as fun entertainment - we do not expect to win, but we do expect to have certain amount of respect.
Amenities or Hotel: N/A - but based on the atmosphere of the Casino I can't imagine staying overnight would be any better, no rating.
Food & Drink: Long lines - long wait times; food not so impressive.
Players club: There's not really any promotions going on ever unlike Oneida (Green Bay) or Mystique in Dubuque.
Customer Service: be prepared to wait and staff is unpleasant.
Table Games: Hosts hardly ever talked - no one seemed to be having fun / I think more had fun on the slot bonus rounds even though nothing was paying out. Saw no big winners throughout the night.
I would recommend going elsewhere... recreational fun does not exist at this casino.
Going only gambling 3-24
Since my previous posts below I had the stomach flu on my annual trip, I'll be heading back 3-24-12 to only gamble on slots, one day trip only and will eat at the Stand Rock Cafe. Once I return from this trip, I'll post my conclusions once again, stay tuned..

Follow up from 3-17 post
Here is the complete break down from this weekend.....
Huge variety of slots, it's all random winning, purely luck based and we were in a 7 couples group and a few one on 1cent and a few on 25cent.
$400 & $275 & $100 won on pennies BUT players were big spenders
$100 won off 25cent machine starting with $20
NOTE.......... I HAD A STOMACH FLU SATURDAY AND DIDN'T GAMBLE MUCH BUT PLAYED $120 OVER A 7 MACHINE PERIOD......... I WAS $50 DOWN BY THE 6TH MACHINE THEN PLAYED A 25CENT MULTI REEL ONE AND THAT'S WHERE I WON MY $100 FROM.
TIP..........( 25cent machines seem to have a better payout ratio for the average gambler)
The $275 winners listed above won a good part of that on blackjack betting normal bets
Dealer was quick, decent and no complaints to note
Only had two expirences to talk about. The first was the custodian cleaning the restroom. He was mopping the floor and no other stalls open. I asked is it ok if I use this one, very kindly said sure. Also, as noted above I had a stomach flu all day Saturday and wanted something other than soda from the free machines. I went up the a main bar and asked if I could get a lemonade. The lady waiter said sure, and got me one for free.
N / A Didn't use nor anyone I know of in our parties use it
Great expirence from the main enterance to the building design to the large selection of slots, table games etc... This is by far my person most favorite casino
[[Amenities or Hotel]]
We stayed at the Motel 6 less than 4 miles away from Ho - Chuck Casino and the room with tax was under $50 / night. Very good price with no problems to mention. I have stayed in the Ho -Chuck rooms a few times and they are very nice, but a bit pricy for just wanting to stay a night.
[[Food & Drink]]
Stand Rock Cafe is a MUST! Again, I had a stomach flu and didn't eat but the night we were there they had all you can eat, seafood, prime rib, crab legs for $21.99. I asked the group I was with how they liked the food, quality, and customer service and they all said 5 stars.
I don't work for this casino, know anyone that works here or have a ties to the success of this casion. The above descriptions was from an independent person [myself] and a person that likes this casino and will be back again for the second return and part of another annual stop for Memorial weekend. Hopefully I can break even, win $100 again [maybe by luck] or leave a bit behind while playing anything I want to.
I HOPE THIS HELPS CLEAR UP ANY CONFUSION FROM ANY OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE SO NICE THAT POST THINGS ON HERE. I'M A COMMON SENSE PERSON AND GIVE ANYTHING OR ANYONE A FAIR HONEST CHANCE.
I'll be visiting 3-17-12, full review to follow
FOR NOW 5 STARS BUT THIS COULD CHANGE............
I'm a level headed person and I'm very patient. I'll be leaving a full open and honest review of this casino once I return home to do so on 3-18-12. I've been to this casino at 2 times per year, once on St. Patrick's day weekend and then once for Memorial weekend. Here is the breakdown of what I plan to do after reading all of the posts listed here:
1) We aren't staying at Ho - Chunk, staying at the Motel 8 [only 3-5 miles away, 1/3 the cost for a room too!]
2) I'll be getting my own drinks [without having to deal with crappy service]
3) I won't be playing any table games at all
4) I'll be only playing 25 cent machines or my favorite penny machine Monopoly Party Train [4 block of machines by one of the enterances] once or twice on 3-17-12 and then once in the later morning on 3-18-12
5) I've never had any problems with the quality of food in the Stand Rock Cafe or the service, thought it was very good and breakfast is AWESOME!
----- I'LL BE BACK 3-18-12 WITH A FULL REPORT FOR THE HO - CHUNK HOTEL / CASINO --------
Quite a change
I use to think this was the best casino in Wisconsin. We decided to go for short vacation (1 night)and chose this casino.I couldn't wait. We haven't been there for a while because it is a long drive to get there for us. So I called to make reservations and got a rude person. OK I thought just a bad day for her. We got there, stood in line to check in and after some confusion finally got checked in. I guess they all were having a bad day. We got the room farthest away from the casino (I guess because I questioned the price of the room). We got down to the casino, lost $100 in penny slots after a little less than an hour of playing, decided to go to the cafe grille for something to eat. Coffee had to be brewing for a couple of days and sandwich was horrible. Went back to playing penny slots, lost alot more money and just decided to go to our room. My laptop couldn't connect to their wireless so ended up watching regular TV. Next morning, shaved with cold water because the hot water didn't work in the sink went down to try and recover some of our money only to lose more. After another hour of losing money I couldn't wait to leave. We didn't eat breakfast there and I don't think I will ever go back there. So if you like to lose money, eat crappy food and deal with rude people that really don't care this is the casino for you.
Great time.... Won overall, lost on nickles, won on quarters and dollars. Room was clean, Channel selection was poor. Need more rooms with whirlpools.
Save your money. Employees are rude, slots are bad and food not good either. If they have a hotel we did not use it so I can't comment on the hotel.
Tight slots and poor service
It's very disappointing to see a nice facility that does not seem to care either about customer service or getting customers to return. The casino is wide open and spacious but the owners seem to not care about building a following. I did not see anyone hitting much of anything for the two days I was there. And the food was not a good quality. Even the salad seemed it had been out way too long and was tough. Beats me how you can serve a bad salad on a buffet.
Probably the best casino in Wiscoinsin
Visited this casino with another couple last Thursday, 10/6/11. I did not make any money but did not expect to based upon previous visits. However, one of the persons who came with us made money, but he was spending at least 90 cents on each pull of the slots. It seems that the more you spend per pull, the more you can make so long as the machine is paying and you have enough sense to leave when you are ahead. I don't think a lot of players have that control. I don't spend a lot of money on the slots so really don't expect to make money which is exactly what happens. But I am disapointed in the fact that the drinks are expensive and watered down based on how much they cost. Also, the food is not much of a deal and not really much to talk about.
The casino is quite nice and expansive and with high ceilings, you don't smell smoke unless you are sitting next to a smoker. There is a good selection of slots so you should not have a problem in finding a favorite, but don't expect to put any money in your pocket as they are really tight and don't payout anything. The bartenders are friendly which makes up a little for the high priced and watered down drinks.
Ho Chunk HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Horrible, tight and the food is terrible. The machines are so tight. Not worth going.
I've been going to Ho-Chunk on a regular basis for several years. The last couple, the paybacks on slots are truly poor at best. I don't play the table games much, as it only takes a couple rude remarks by dealers to turn me off to those games. They have improved the look of the place, but I feel the odds aren't as good, nor is the food as good as it used to be.
Worst craps table I have ever been at. Head crew person was unbelievably rude. no comps. They argued with players. Refused to pay a bet that was clearly legit. I've played craps at 30 different casinos, and this place is far and away the most rude .
Ho Chunk casino machines are so horribbly, horribly tight........so tight the couple next to me spit on their machine!!!
I would please, please keep an eye on your wallet in this place!!! If you have to - stop!
SERIOUSLY MACHINES R SOOOOO TIGHT
EVERY MACHINE IN THIS CASINO IS A RIP OFF NOTHING HITS HERE ANYMORE AND I SHOULD KNOW I GO TWICE A WEEK FOR 2 YEARS IN A ROW WELL NO MORE IM TIRED OF BEING SCAMMED THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN GET ANY TYPE OF CREDITS IS BY MAX BETTING THEN YOU WILL BE BROKE THOSE MACHINES ALL NEED TO TO BE CHECKED OUT FOR FRAUD TOOK 100.00 WAS BROKE IN 10 MINUTES BETTING .30 THATS A REAL JOKE THEY ARE SO MONEY HUNGRY AND IF YOUR THIRSTY LONG TIME FOR A WAITRESS TO COME AROUND AND WHEN SHE DOES ITS WATERED DOWN SODA PLZ PLZ DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY THEY NEED TO BE REPORTED THANK YOU
HOCHUNK RIPPED ME OFF!!!
I won 2 jackpots and was told "Sorry, there was a computer problem, we cant pay you the $4,500 that it says you won." That happened twice.
The waitresses were rude and seemed hungry for tips without doing anything to deserve them. Food was lukewarm and seemed to have been from a TV dinner. I signed up for a tournament and was told after standing in line, "Sorry we had too many people sign up, come back tomorrow." WHAT A JOKE....... RIP OFF!!!!!!
worst experience ever
Went to Ho-chunk North 2 months ago and My Boyfriend and I will never go back. We played and lost like usual, but this time it was the machine that was making us lose.
The winning combinations were lining up but it was paying out nothing. Finnaly we got sick of it and asked someone why it was not paying for the winning lines. Well the machine operator was stumped as to why it wouldn't pay for the winning line, so lets ask the slot supervisors, well when that one doesn't know, hey how about the floor manager?
Well needless to say they needed to turn off the machine and find out about it later. So we filled out a customer complaint form and they floor manager promised up and down that we would be contacted by that following monday. NOTHING, not even a curtesy call. we went back the following week to get answers and got the same exact bull crap. And to top it off the food was terrible. I wanted a mix drink, well that cost me 8 dollers for about a 5oz glass. We will never go back there again. My mom just went there for her birthday and they wouldn't give her anything because she didnt use her card enough. This casino needs help.
Ho-Chunck North -Worst Casino Anywhere
On Saturday, April 25, 2009 we drove from Milwaukee to the "New" Ho-Chunk North Casino. What a waste of time.
The Casino had computer problems and had to hand pay everyone. Instead of closing the doors and shutting down machines they acted as if it was business as usual. By not acting in a pro-active manner they had a real mess on their hands that just kept snowballing.
Management and employees did not know how to handle the situation and their "Customer Service" was non-existant. I had put money in a slot and then it would not let me play. The person who came, got it working and told me to just play it off. That statement offened me, as I felt he was saying just give up the money. The machines would not cash out. People waited 2 hours or more to be cashed out.
Employees who were cashing people out, just stayed in one area of the Casino. So those on the other side of the Casino waited 2 hours or more to get cashed out. They were telling people over the paging system that it would be a 20 minute wait. The only employee that seemed to truely care about the patrons was a cleaning lady.
I would never go there again to spend my hard earned money. I am telling everyone I know about the poor management and employee attitude. Avoid it like the plague.
Come from Chicago once a year. Nice hotel close to the Dells area. Big Casino with lots of options, but I agree with other posters that service has gotten worse. A few years ago EVERYONE was very friendly. Now it's hit and miss.
And yes, I've seen dealers who just want their tips, even before they've given you any good serveice. Ate at the sports bar upstairs, service poor, but food was decent. The casino is nice and big. Good variety of games/slots. Maybe they will get that they need to get back on their customer service game.
I like it here, because it is located near to the Wisconsin Dells. I think the Dells is a lovely place to visit, and with Ho Chunk, it makes it more exciting.
What a waste of time - too many issues!
First off, it was my 3rd year going and the service has been going downhill for sure. It took almost an hour for a waitress to finally come over and ask "why wait for me, when there's a soda fountain around back?"
Then the pitboss couldn't have cared less when there was a mis-paid amount and made me wait 35 minutes to review a tape to get me my 25 dollar chip back. It seemed like all the dealers were having a very bad day, they were rude and inconsiderate.
Go take your money and play somewhere else, this casino has fallen on hard times and doesn't care about the players. The other reviewer seems correct, why would someone who gambles here go on and on and on about promotions and free this and that unless they worked for ho chunk.......WHAT A SHAME.....NO MORE FOR ME.......
