Michigan is a large state with a great selection of land-based casinos. Given that gambling is so popular in the state, it might not be an enormous surprise that Michigan has recently legalized online casinos (and sports betting) as well.

Online Casinos in Michigan

Michigan is one of the latest states to legalized online casinos. It’s part of the second wave of states that intend on joining Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey in allowing its residents to enjoy online casino gaming.

Is it Legal to Play Online with a Michigan Casino?

Michigan is a state that has a strange history with all forms of online gambling. Back in 1999, Senate Bill 562 was enacted, which was designed to prevent online gambling.

However, the very next year the state code was essentially dismantled. It removed the line about how it’s prohibited to use the Internet to violate gambling laws in Michigan.

This put it in the odd position of neither being legal or illegal.

Much of the drive to stop online gambling in Michigan has been powered by Native American tribes, which run most of the land-based casinos within the state.

So can you play in a Michigan casino online today?

The answer is yes. There are now a few online casinos in Michigan, with more on the way.

When Did Online Casinos Open Up in Michigan?

On December 20th, 2019, the governor of Michigan signed legislation to remove the long-running ban on online gambling within the state.

These laws have come into effect in 2020, with operators only allowed to use a single skin, and they’re not allowed to operate multi-state games.

There are three commercial Michigan casinos and 23 tribal casinos that are allowed to apply for a license.

Finally, in early 2021, the first online casino went live in MI. Today, there are almost a dozen casinos sites available for MI residents, with more on the way.

The following online casinos are currently operating in MI:

  1. BetRivers
  2. BetMGM
  3. DraftKings
  4. Golden Nugget
  5. FanDuel
  6. William Hill
  7. Stars Casino

Can Michigan Gamblers Expect to See Major Casino Brands?

This is where it gets complex because Michigan has implemented strict controls on which casinos will be entitled to create online platforms.

As mentioned above, 23 casinos within Michigan have been given the go-ahead to apply for a license. This doesn’t apply to casinos with land-based interests in other states.

However, already, big names in the iGaming industry in the U.S. like BetMGM and Golden Nugget are operating online casinos in MI.

Are Offshore Casinos Legal in Michigan?

US anti-gambling law has traditionally focused on the operator, rather than the player. Although Michigan law has stated that winning more than $50 with an unauthorized online casino is a felony, this law has almost never been enforced.

State troopers have busted plenty of illegal gambling operations on the street, but they’ve never busted down doors because a resident played with an offshore casino online.

Offshore casinos will accept Michigan residents, and with the legalization of online casinos in Michigan, there’s nothing to stop locals from playing online in this way.

A Warning About Playing with Online Offshore Casinos in Michigan

Although it may be tempting to get started playing with an online casino before Michigan casinos online open for business, you must be aware of the lack of player protections elsewhere.

If you have a problem with a casino in Michigan, you’re protected and you’re able to complain. An online casino based offshore in another country is an entirely different prospect.

You won’t have much recourse if you experience problems with an offshore casino.

Will Online Michigan Casinos Be Open to Residents Only?

The law in Michigan only applies to residents of Michigan. The state government has gone down the same path as New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

Online casino operators will be bound to check that all their players are residents of the state of Michigan. They’ll do this through requesting an address within the state and then verifying that address upon the player making a withdrawal for the first time.

Even if you’re a US citizen but resident in another state where online casinos are legal, you won’t be able to play.

Geolocation Requirements for Online Casinos in Michigan

All online casinos in Michigan will use geolocation technology to ensure that players only play within the state lines of Michigan.

Heavy fines are likely if a casino is found to have allowed out-of-state players to have accounts with them.

The rule on location also will apply to playing outside state lines. For example, if a resident of Michigan attempts to play with an online casino when they’re in Wisconsin or Illinois they’ll be automatically blocked until they cross back into Michigan.

Finally, the online casinos that do open will come with software to detect when someone is using a VPN to attempt to circumvent these requirements.

Online Poker in Michigan

US gambling law is strange because as well as separating online casinos and online sportsbooks into distinct entities, they do the same with online poker rooms.

For regular gamblers, this may seem strange because most online poker games are attached to online casinos anyway.

Michigan does the same.

Thankfully, Michigan has also legalized online poker rooms. Any online casinos launching in 2020 and beyond will be authorized to offer online poker.

Can I Play Online Poker in Michigan Internationally?

This is where things get complicated in Michigan law. The new online gambling laws explicitly ban multi-state games, like in a variety of states.

The one exception to this is between Delaware and Nevada. These two states have an agreement whereby players from these two states can play against each other in the same online poker room.

As of this writing, Michigan has no such agreement with any other state.

For now, playing online poker outside of Michigan is contentious, but once the 23 casinos within Michigan create online poker rooms you’ll still be able to enjoy playing online against others.

Native American Casinos in Michigan

Native American casinos in Michigan are not required to release information on their slot machine payback percentages.

However, according to officials at the Michigan Gaming Control Board, which is responsible for overseeing the tribal-state compacts, “the machines must meet the minimum standards for machines in Nevada or New Jersey.”

In Nevada, the minimum return is 75% and in New Jersey, it’s 83%. Therefore, Michigan Native American casinos must return at least 75% in order to comply with the law.

Unlike all of the Michigan casinos, in many states, the slot machine payback statistics for that particular state’s casinos are released as a matter of public record. Just click here to see a list of slot machine payback statistics for casinos in all U.S. states.

Gambling In Michigan Today

Online casino gambling has now been legalized in Michigan, however, it is not available at the time of writing. It is hoped that online casinos will become available in 2020.

At the time is not yet clear which casinos will be among the first to have their online casino apps and websites approved by the state.

An online casino must prove that its games are fair and cannot be corrupted. It also must ensure that any guest is of legal age, has not self-excluded from gambling, and is of legal age.

This process simply takes time, but the temporary closure of many land-based casinos has put on pressure to get online casinos available as soon as possible.
